Quantum computing has long been associated with technical breakthroughs, record-setting hardware and ambitious predictions about the future. Today, however, the conversation is beginning to change. Business leaders are asking different questions: What does commercial readiness actually look like? How do we measure progress? And perhaps most importantly, how can organizations prepare for quantum adoption before the technology reaches widespread commercial deployment?
These questions shaped discussions at three recent industry events: The Economist’s 5th Annual Commercialising Quantum, the 2026 Reality Check panel hosted by Venture Café and Nexus, and the Quantum in Pubs networking evening hosted by GQI. While each event approached the topic from a different perspective, they all pointed towards the same conclusion: technical progress now needs to be matched by practical routes to adoption.
Measuring what really matters
One of the most interesting discussions took place during The Economist conference, where the panel explored the topic of “Qubit Quality Over Quantity.” While there was broad agreement that qubit quality is becoming more important than simply increasing physical qubit counts, the discussion quickly evolved into a more fundamental question: what should the industry actually be measuring?
As quantum computing matures, traditional hardware metrics alone no longer provide the full picture. Commercial users need benchmarks that reflect real capability rather than engineering achievements in isolation. From my perspective, two metrics are becoming increasingly relevant:
- Logical qubit count as an indicator of usable computational capability.
- The number of coherent operations as a measure of how much useful computation can be performed before errors become limiting.
Neither metric is yet universally accepted. But both move the discussion closer to what ultimately matters: whether a quantum computer can solve meaningful business problems. More broadly, the industry appears to be shifting away from evaluating individual hardware characteristics such as fidelity, connectivity or physical qubit counts in isolation. Instead, attention is increasingly turning towards overall system performance and practical usability.
From hardware progress to enterprise readiness
This evolution in measurement reflects a broader shift in how organizations think about quantum computing. For many years, progress primarily meant reaching new hardware milestones. Today, customers are asking more practical questions:
- Which business problems can quantum solve?
- When will those solutions become commercially viable?
- How do we integrate quantum into existing enterprise environments?
Answering these questions requires stronger links between technical progress, practical deployment and measurable business value. Concepts such as logical qubits, error correction and overall system performance therefore become more than technical achievements. Increasingly, they are indicators of enterprise readiness.
Preparing for commercial adoption
The same message emerged during the Venture Café “2026 Reality Check” panel. The industry is rapidly moving beyond demonstrating isolated examples of quantum advantage.
The next challenge is scaling adoption and helping organizations prepare for practical implementation. In a market that continues to generate ambitious announcements, roadmap credibility is becoming increasingly important. Organizations need confidence that today’s experimentation will evolve into tomorrow’s production environments through practical hybrid architectures rather than isolated quantum systems.
For business leaders, several priorities are already becoming clear:
- Identify commercially valuable use cases.
- Develop hybrid quantum-classical workflows.
- Build internal expertise and organizational readiness.
- Treat quantum as part of long-term technology strategy rather than distant research.
The organizations that begin this work today will be in a far stronger position when commercial quantum computing reaches broader adoption.
Building an ecosystem for commercial quantum
One thing is for sure: technology alone will not determine the pace of quantum adoption. An encouraging observation across all three events was the growing collaboration between researchers, hardware vendors, software providers, start-ups, governments and enterprise users. As the industry matures, building a healthy ecosystem is becoming just as important as advancing the underlying technology.
A good example is the announcement of the Quantum Standards Network. Common standards will eventually become essential for commercial deployment, but they also need to evolve alongside the technology rather than limiting innovation too early.
Interestingly, the quantum industry has largely allowed performance metrics to develop organically. Benchmarks emerge, drive innovation for a period and are gradually replaced as better measurements become available. Quantum Volume is a good example: once widely discussed, it has now largely given way to more meaningful indicators of capability. Developing a common language without restricting innovation will be an important next step as quantum computing moves closer to commercial maturity.

This changing landscape also shapes Fujitsu’s and Fsas Technologies’ approach to quantum computing. Qubit numbers will always remain important. Looking ahead
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from these discussions was not a single announcement or technical breakthrough. It was the industry’s changing mindset. The conversation is moving beyond hardware achievements towards commercial readiness. Organizations are asking less about qubit counts and more about outcomes. Investors are looking beyond laboratory demonstrations towards scalable business models. Technology leaders are focusing on integration, operational readiness and long-term competitive advantage.
Commercial quantum computing is entering a new phase. Success will no longer be defined solely by scientific progress, but by the ability to transform that progress into trusted business capability. For organizations, the message is becoming increasingly clear: preparing for quantum adoption should begin well before the technology becomes business critical. And for the industry as a whole, collaboration, practical deployment and credible roadmaps will be just as important as the next technical breakthrough.
